Have you heard of the movie Surfwise? It's about a family with 9 children who lived in a 24 foot RV and sacrificed education for surfing and living the life their father envisioned for them. Very unconventional family with interesting values. Again something I cannot relate to even though the kids are closer to my generation than the Gosselin kids. It's an interesting movie if you happen to stumble upon it. _
My foot felt the best when I was in the water. No resistance, I guess. Its actually started feeling worse since we got home and daily tasks have kept me busy. How long are you suppose to ice? I thought it was just the first 24 hours. But i started icing again tonight and it feels slightly better.
Saw Mamma Mia today. Such a fun movie! Totally corny, but I loved it! _

Saw an accident happen in front of me today involving a semi-truck. I have to give props to the semi driver because he skillfully avoided hitting the 2 cars in the lane next to him on the left, avoided jack-knifing his truck and rolling it. From what I could tell, a car in the slow lane (going fast) cut him off and probably hit the semi or the semi clipped the car when the car cut him off. The semi slammed his brakes and served into the left lane (the lane I was in, behind the 2 cars directly next to him). Amazingly, he didn't hit the cars next to him and they didn't hit him. We were all going around 60 mph or more. It's insane how fast the dialog in your brain happens: "WTF is happening?? Brake! Don't hit the car! Semi, don't roll! OMG, there's gonna be a pile up. Is that car behind me gonna hit me? Can i move into the left lane? Move into the left lane!" And all this dialog is happening in the other 10 cars around me, too. Thankfully, both the semi and the car drove to the shoulder and no one visibly looked injured. Crazily, as everyone passed the incident, they all zoomed off, seemingly unfazed. Me? I moved over to the slow lane and counted my blessings.
On another note, I watch the movie "The Visitor". Possibly the best movie I've seen this year. Coincidentally, hit on topics of: -Listening to music you don't understand -Noticing the workings of power and privilege in your culture -Learning people's history -Assuming that many others share your dreams -Know that no one is silent though many are not heard and -Watch films with subtitles although this film didn't have subtitles, I believe that it's in the style that would help global awareness.
Here's a trailer (there's one in the link above, too. It's the same.):
Rain went away so I did a bit of window shopping at Santana Row.Wouldn't it be nice to drink my diet soda from one of these glasses? Scented candles in funky tins. I was drawn more to the colorful tins rather than the scents. Didn't buy either.
This would be a cool place for a photo shoot.
Waiting to turn left onto Hamilton Ave. Too many check engine lights.
While I was there, I saw Atonement. Sad but very good. I cried. _
Been having fun playing with the Simpson's avatar maker. These really look nothing like us, but ya never know in Springfield. That's me and Jimmy in the back seat of the Simpson's car. Along for the ride.
Somehow we found ourselves in Alaska, so we're watching Homer tame the sled dogs. Or visa versa.
Here we are enjoying the views of Exit Glacier. Getting ready for our hike for a closer look.
Here's Jimmy and Madretz-Simpson during the hike up to the glacier.
Our Simpson alter ego's made the hike to the glacier. Here we are listening to the ranger tell us all the factoids.
And we continue our journey through Alaska with a pit stop in Moose Pass.
I highly recommend making your own Simpson Avatar. Check it out! _
I needed to get the sounds of my last movie experience out of my mind, so I went to see Georgia Rule. It was pretty good. Not what I expected, but good, simple, dramedy. Afterwards, I walked down the street to see if the Paper Source was open yet and it was. The smell of fresh paint and paper-almost as good as coffee. Note to self, Phin and any lurking stamp club members: grand opening event on June 2nd.
Also noticed that an H&M is opening in the shopping center in the near future. V.omg-you so have to come back and visit when it does! We'll go to Sausalito, too!
There must be an event going on this weekend because there were about a half dozen chalk artists drawing on the street. It was so cool to watch! Amazingly talented!
I tried to go to a movie today. I went to see "In The Land Of Women" and from what I could hear, it was good. There were 3 of us in the theater. The couple sat in the very back and chatted thru the previews. A lot of people talk thru the previews, so I didn't mind. There's only been one other time when I was annoyed by chatters during a movie because most of the time, people are considerate. They also came to watch a movie, so they're paying attention.
Most of the time.
Not today.
When the movie started, they chatted a little, but were also making out occasionally, so I'd get breaks where they weren't talking. Then her phone rang. She carried on a 15 minute conversation, obviously upset because her voice kept getting louder and louder. Finally, she hung up, but now she had to tell her boyfriend all about it.
Thru all of this, I'm thinking, "You guys just paid $8.25 each to Not Watch A Movie. What the...heck."
After a little bit, they were "quiet" again, till she got another phone call. This one didn't last as long, because she was anxious to get back to what she was doing. And then, the making out...went to that place where you really don't wanna hear.
Then I realized that $16.50 is a lot cheaper than a motel.
Today's temps in San Jose peaked at 108, muggy and partially cloudy. The air was thick. Blech. We were watching the Weather Channel this evening and saw that 75% of homes in the nation have air conditioners. I was surprised because I'm sure that less than 40% of the homes in the Bay Area have AC. Because of this, people are seeking refuge outside of their homes. We went to the movies today and the line was long. The people behind us said "Is this the end of the line for air conditioning?" People joked about how they didn't care what they movie they saw, just let 'em in the theatre. Unfortunately for one viewer though, it was too late. Jimmy and I took our seats and the poor woman in front of us was having a heat stroke. I'm not exaggerating. She was young and fit, in her 20's. But she was delirious, foaming at the mouth, eyes rolled back and sweating uncontrollably. The paramedics came, gave her oxygen and took her out. It was very sad and scary. I hope she's ok now.
We saw "The Lady in the Water". It was very good and totally not what I expected. I'll end with that lest I give anything away.
Rarely does a birthday go by with complaints. The 103 degree temperatures didn't even phase me today! Started the day with a trip to Capitola and breakfast at a little cafe Jimmy and I stumbled upon several years ago during a spontaneous outing. I had amazing artichoke cakes (think crabcakes but artichokes instead) with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. We sat by the window and had views of the Pacific Ocean. After breakfast we walked onto the beach and enjoyed the warm sun.
These colorful buildings are iconic in Capitola. Little bungalows with million dollar views of the ocean. After a leisure walk up the wharf, we headed back towards home where temperatures were quickly heading to 100 degrees...and it wasn't even noon! No worries though, an few hours at the movie theatre to watch The Devil Wears Prada then browsing at Borders killed the hottest part of the day. Received several cards, many emails, 2 e-greeting cards, 5 phone calls and lots of comments from blogging friends. Loved when my MIL, FIL, SIL, BIL and 2 neices called together and sang Happy Birthday on the speaker phone! I thank everyone for making me feel so loved. My cup runneth over.
Hello, my name is Madretz and I'm an SUV driver. It's not really something I yell out to the world. But in my defense, it doesn't get "that" bad of gas mileage considering typical SUV mileage. And we actually use it's 4wd capabilities. Since we have a cabin that is up a mountainous road with an average snowfall of 40 inches per year, we need a car that has a high clearance and won't (hopefully) get stuck in the snow or mud. We try to be responsible SUV drivers. If/when this car dies, we've talked about getting the hybrid version or Toyota Highlander's hybrid version.
However, with gas prices the way they are and evidence that we really need to pay more attention to how we're affecting our environment, I'm tempted to park my car and not drive it at all.
Jimmy's car is still at the mechanics (day 11). My "check engine" light came on a couple of days ago. Luckily we can function with only one vehicle, but I can't help but be concerned about that check engine light. Coincidentally, it came on the day after we watched "An Inconvenient Truth."
After watching that movie, I can't help but pay attention to these coincidences. The flooding back east, the droughts in the southwest, and the record temperatures we've had in the west. At the very least, you have to scratch your chin.
Jimmy photoshopped the racing advertisement onto my car a couple of years ago just for the halibut. I particularily like the purple rims. :-) The original photo was taken about a mile from where I grew up.
I started this more as a photo blog, then added art and crafts and now, well...nothing is off limits because I'm spilling open!
I'll be posting pics of friends and family - I know a few of you don't want to be 'published' so I'll keep you anonymous.
If you see your pic here but don't want it up, just let me know and I'll happily remove. The last thing I want is to make anyone uncomfortable or unhappy.
Cheers and thanks for visiting!
